Researching individuals and world events is important because history is often told from the viewpoint of governments, powerful institutions, victors, or influential leaders. Careful research helps us develop a fuller and more accurate understanding of what actually happened.
Researching history is not simply about memorizing names and dates. It is about honoring those who lived through these events, holding leaders and institutions accountable, learning from humanity’s successes and failures, and giving future generations a more truthful foundation on which to build a better world.

4. Dr. Louis Jolyon West- Dr. Louis Jolyon “Jolly” West (1924–1999) was an American psychiatrist known for his research on brainwashing and mind control, particularly during the Korean War. He also worked with the CIA on Project MKUltra and served as a professor and chair of psychiatry at UCLA.

2. School of Americas- For the past 69 years, many of the most notorious U.S.-backed South American dictators, along with their secret police and torturers, have learned their dark arts from a secretive American training facility.
Originally founded in 1946 and based in Panama, it was expelled from the nation in 1984 under the terms of the Panama Canal Treaty. Hundreds of thousands of Latin Americans have been tortured, raped, murdered or “disappeared” through the work of its 64,000 graduates.
It first became a target for activists over three decades ago, after repeated atrocities in El Salvador were linked to graduates of the school. In December of 1980, three Catholic nuns, Dorothy Kazel, Maura Clarke, and Ita Ford, along with a Catholic lay missionary, Jean Donovan, were kidnapped by El Salvadoran soldiers who proceeded to torture, rape, and murder the four women under orders from the country’s military dictatorship in retaliation for their advocacy for the impoverished.

Ahh, a nice, warm bowl of oatmeal: could there be a more hearty or wholesome breakfast? Loaded with fiber, nutrients, and – if you’re feeling decadent – a dash of brown sugar – it’s the perfect way to start your day. Or so the big cereal companies and their cheery adverts would have you believe.
But for a group of Massachusetts orphans in the 1940s and 50s, this breakfast of champions came with an extra, unexpected ingredient: a whopping dose of radiation. Unwitting guinea pigs in a secret study funded by Quaker Oats and MIT, these children were some of the thousands of victims of the most unethical decades of American medical research. This is the disturbing story of the Fernald State School Oatmeal Experiments.
Our story begins at the Walter E. Fernald State School, located in Waltham, Massachusetts. Founded in 1888 as the Experimental School for Teaching and Training Idiotic Children, Fernald was the product of the American Eugenics Movement, which sought to improve the nation’s genetic stock – and society as a whole – by preventing those individuals seen as “defective” from breeding. Institutions like Fernald, of which there were nearly 100 across the United States, were designed to house, isolate – and, in certain cases, forcibly sterilize – children deemed to be “feeble-minded”.
