Sam and Bob Kukich deserve recognition in the TRUTHSEEKERS HALL OF FAME because they have devoted their experience, leadership, and compassion to uncovering problems within nursing homes and defending elderly residents who cannot always defend themselves.

Their work represents truth-seeking in its most meaningful form: discovering suffering that others may overlook, documenting the problems, educating families, confronting those in authority, and demanding humane treatment for vulnerable people.

Sam Kukich: Giving the Forgotten a Voice

Sam Kukich’s advocacy began with a painful personal experience. After moving her mother-in-law, Rose—affectionately called “Baba”—to Virginia, Sam visited her daily in several elder-care facilities. According to Dignity for the Aged, Sam saw facilities fail to provide the care they had promised and witnessed instances of suspected neglect and abuse.

The breaking point came in September 2018, when Sam found Baba battered and bruised in her nursing-home room. Baba had lived in four facilities in the Hampton Roads area, and Sam concluded that the inadequate care her family encountered was not merely an isolated incident. Once Baba was moved somewhere safe, Sam decided that something had to be done. She established Dignity for the Aged to provide a voice for elderly people who felt forgotten. Sam transformed her family’s suffering into a public mission. Instead of remaining silent, she began raising awareness, informing families of their rights, and seeking improvements in elder-care facilities. Her organization supplies information about:

• Nursing-home inspections and comparisons
• Residents’ legal rights
• Staffing shortages
• Abuse and neglect
• State ombudsman programs
• Filing official complaints
• Contacting elected representatives
• Care alternatives and family resources

The organization also participated in a Virginia state work group examining the nursing-home clinical workforce. Dignity for the Aged says its members presented information concerning understaffing, low wages, employee burnout, neglect, and residents dying from inadequate care—even though members believed their evidence and concerns were largely disregarded. Sam is also a United States Army veteran. She was reportedly selected as the first woman to work for the Army’s Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence. Her later career included training, project management, support for the Coast Guard and Department of Homeland Security, and leadership of a task force for Joint Forces Command. Sam is worthy of the TRUTHSEEKERS HALL OF FAME because she refused to look away. She investigated what was happening, challenged complacency, and made it her mission to speak for elderly residents whose age, illness, or physical condition prevented them from speaking effectively for themselves.

Bob Kukich: A Veteran Continuing to Serve

Bob Kukich has stood beside Sam and supported the work of Dignity for the Aged as its treasurer. His participation gives the organization the management experience, stability, and accountability required to continue its advocacy.

Bob is a retired United States Army lieutenant colonel who served for 22 years as a Field Artillery and Foreign Area Officer. His assignments included approximately ten years overseas in Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom. He served as the U.S. Army exchange officer to the British Army’s Royal Army Educational Corps and graduated from the Italian Army War College.

Bob retired from the Army in 1992 after serving at Fort Monroe, Virginia, as deputy director of a training and analysis directorate within the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command. He later worked in training, management analysis, and business development. Since retiring from civilian employment, he has served numerous charitable, religious, youth, business, and community organizations. Read Bob’s biography.

Bob’s contribution demonstrates that military service does not necessarily end when a uniform is put away. By supporting an organization that investigates nursing-home conditions, assists families, and advocates for residents, he has continued serving people who need protection.

His military and professional background provides important skills for this work:

A Shared Mission of Service and Truth

Sam and Bob Kukich understand that nursing-home residents are not statistics. They are mothers, fathers, grandparents, veterans, teachers, workers, and beloved members of families. Every resident deserves safety, proper care, human companionship, and a dignified existence.

Through Dignity for the Aged, Sam and Bob have helped families understand that nursing-home residents possess federally protected rights, including the right to dignity and self-determination.
